A code of conduct on the Internet (in the literature: netiquette) we mean the set of rules that define acceptable behavior between two or more Internet users in their electronic communications. The code of conduct on the Internet aims to establish conventions of politeness and respect, and to more efficient interaction among the users. The nature of the rules component is ceremonial and thus not obeying them does not lead to legal sanctions.
The interpretation and application of the code of conduct on the Internet vary from community to community. The official rules are set out and described in detail To the document IETF RFC 1855, prepared by the group Responsible Use of the Network (RUN).

Definition and growth conditions

George Frigas in his book "Advertising and Marketing on the Internet referring to the code of conduct on the Internet gives the following description:" customary rules of conduct among Internet users, whose observance is necessary for the proper functioning ".
The formulation of the code of conduct on the Internet prior to the creation of the World Wide Web (World Wide Web). In the early years of the Internet, where email communication between educational and research institutions was one of the main uses of the Internet, post commercial messages deemed indecency. This led to the establishment of the first common rules of conduct between the communities. The first mention of the term «netiquette» dating from at least 1983, as evidenced by publications in satirical column «Dear Emily Postnews».
The increasing number of new non-technically trained users on the Internet, exchanging large amounts of information and data, and the choice of anonymity expanded use and application of the code of conduct on the Internet. An important factor in establishing additional rules and has been the lack of nonverbal messages (eg facial expressions, tone of voice) in electronic writing, which often leads to misinterpretation of the text and intent of the sender.
Today, many of the fundamental rules of ethical conduct on the Internet are still in use and under such organizations and popular websites have created their own policies and ethical conduct. However, there are some businesses, communities or websites that do not comply and make a violation of the code of conduct on the Internet.

The rules of the code of conduct on the Internet identified in all popular forms of electronic communication such as Instant Messaging (Instant Messaging), electronic mail (e-mail), weblogs (blogs), electronic mailing lists (mailing lists), newsgroups (discussion forums) and the chat channel (chat rooms).

The rules of the code of conduct on the Internet vary from community to community and changed depending on the nature of the communication medium. However, there are some common rules (general and specific) to identify acceptable standards of conduct on privacy issues and proper preparation of electronic writing.
Illustration, the best known general rules referred to in keeping a cautious stance in electronic communication, respect for privacy and time to link us to the proper management of our anonymity, to avoid personal disputes and condescension to others. Specifically, for the last rule, the Virginia Shea's book «Netiquette» says we should be polite when our interlocutor is wrong and very careful when we make corrections to the comments of others.

To send email but in general for compilation of electronic writing, formulated specific rules by which the best known are:
  • By avoiding sending junk mail (spam or junk mail)
  • Respect the privacy of recipients
  • Not use capital letters, which are interpreted as a towering tone of voice
  • Not to promote personal e-mail discussion lists
  • Therefore, consideration notifications (cc), the Bcc (bcc), the separation of paragraphs
  • and spelling - syntax errors
The frequent violation of the first two rules is characteristic of our era, after the massive spamming (Spamming) is a widespread practice of advertising.

Contributing to the observance of the Code of conduct on the Internet

Compliance with the Code of conduct on the Internet it is first and foremost the will of the user. However, today most Internet service providers encourage the application of rules, adopting acceptable use policies that circumscribe the permissible and impermissible activities of users, and rules in their communication.
The violation of the terms of use may lead to failure to publish or delete offensive comments, excluding the user from a newsgroup, or even suspension of use privileges.
Important however is the contribution of companies or organizations that embody respect for the code of conduct on the Internet in politics CSR follow.
